Summary

Infernal tells the story of Ryan Lennox, a fallen angel now recruited by hell to fight 'Etherlight', heaven's own secret agency. Etherlight has eliminated most of hell’s earthly agents and is planning its final blow against its arch rival. Ryan, hunted by his opponents, is left to take them on single-handed, armed with a vast arsenal of weapons and supernatural powers. The captivating plot sends him from ancient monastery catacombs and secret mountain hideouts to sprawling harbour docks and oil refineries, before finally facing the ultimate showdown...Ryan Lennox will need all his powers to find out what's really behind Etherlight’s plans, while he unleashes hell with every single weapon in his hand! Unique atmosphere, unbelievable graphics, great amount of possibilities combined with simple intuitive steering, and a hero never seen before - these constitute the essence of Infernal. [Playlogic]

Cheat Code Central

On a platform that's actually been criticized for having too many shooters, it's tough to recommend a shooter so mediocre as Infernal: Hell's Vengeance.

Totally360

Overall, Infernal: Hell’s Vengeance had a lot of potential that it just didn’t reach. If Playlogic had devoted the same energy on designing the game’s heart as it did creating its skin, they could very well have had a surprise, off-season hit. Instead, the game is best taken in short play sessions with countless pause-save breaks for sanity’s sake.

The story is original, but poorly told. The action is fast-paced, but frustrating. Everything seems like a winner on paper, but when you finally get your hands on the controller things just fall apart.

Don't buy Infernal unless you're teaching a "What Not to Do in Game Design" seminar.

IGN

Thanks to a fidgety character control and aiming system, half-baked cover and evasion mechanics, repetitive enemy encounters and some underdeveloped special abilities that are more of an inconvenience than anything else, Infernal's appeal gets stamped out amidst its many missteps.

Worth Playing

Infernal: Hell's Vengeance has a neat premise, and that's it. The gameplay is botched in every conceivable way, and the graphics and voice acting will grate on you endlessly.

Gamer Limit

Infernal: Hell's Vengeance had a lot of potential, but falls short of just about every mark.

VideoGamer

It's incredibly dated, lacking features we expected in console games a generation ago, and almost devoid of any truly original ideas. In this battle between Heaven and Hell no one is victorious.

AceGamez

Somewhere in Infernal: Hell's Vengeance is a solid if unspectacular addition to the shooting genre, but that game is buried under a pile of technical issues and poor design choices that ruin any chance that the game had of making an impact in an extremely competitive genre.

Some promising ideas, but little to no delivery on any of them. [Issue#49, p.90]

Official Xbox Magazine

Overly linear levels, repetitive fights, and a distinct lack of polish. [Oct 2009, p.75]

If you live a life of sin and gluttony, Infernal will be waiting for you in the afterlife.

The dictionary defines “infernal” as “hellish, fiendish, diabolical,” as it should be, but it also has a definition of “extremely troublesome, annoying.” Unfortunately, Infernal lives up to both of those definitions all too well.

Developer PlayLogic’s first outing for the 360 contains a few good ideas but ultimately can’t come anywhere near even the most standard games out there today.

Official Xbox Magazine UK

This game originally came out on PC back in 2007, and it really has no place on Xbox 360 in 2009.

GameCritics

Something like Infernal: Hell's Vengeance might have gained a minor following during the last generation (and that's a big might have) but it simply doesn't have any place in today's environment. It's technically weak and showcases no forward-thinking in terms of design, and the conceptual side is just as stale.

We could go on and on listing the problems with Infernal: Hell’s Vengeance, but like the game, we were bored from the very beginning of having to write this.

Eurogamer Spain

All the bad things from the original PC game are still here and, what's worse, the Xbox 360 port is not as good as it should be. Can't recommend this to anyone but those who already beat the rest of action games for Microsoft's console or achievement collectors.

GameShark

As the game was released a couple of years ago on the PC and met with lackluster reviews, I'm not sure what the motivation was behind re-releasing it on the 360 without addressing any of its many, many faults. Whatever the reasoning, there are so many quality shooters on the 360 and there's so much wrong with this game that even with Infernal's budget price, there's no reason to check this one out.

To say that the gameplay feels clunky is a huge understatement. Throw in a cover system that defies belief, which is often essential for boss encounters, and it's a tiresome slog. [Oct 2009, p.128]

Xbox World 360 Magazine UK

Hell's vengeance is indefensible scrot that has no place in this console generation. [Nov 2009, p.90]
