Summary

As Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare's single player campaign unfolds, the player is introduced to new gameplay at every turn – one moment you are fast-roping from your Black Hawk helicopter after storming into the war zone with an armada of choppers, the next you are a sniper, under concealment, in a Ghillie suit miles behind enemy lines, the next you are engaging hostiles from an AC-130 gunship thousands of feet above the battlefield. Mixed with explosive action, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare also delivers special effects, including use of depth of field, rim-lighting, character self-shadowing, real time post-processing, texture streaming as well as physics-enabled effects. Infinity Ward deployed a dedicated team from the start to deliver a new level of depth to multiplayer. Building on the hit "Call of Duty 2" online experience, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare's new multiplayer provides the community an addictive and accessible experience to gamers of all levels. Simply put, Call of Duty 4 does everything right and nearly nothing wrong. But where it elevates itself above even the best 360 shooters is how all of the good stuff is ludicrously good. The campaign never lets up, while multiplayer is a triple-A affair in itself. [Dec 2007, p.36]

Start to finish, online or off, Call of Duty 4 is solid gold. Some might decry the single-player’s short length or that it’s more of the same, but its amazing quality and the Arcade mode...more than make up for it. Infinity Ward has delivered on every front, and there is no question in my mind that this is the best action shooter that I have ever played.

An instant classic. The fact that Infinity Ward has created a modern-day masterpiece probably isn’t surprising given their impressive track record to date, but our lofty expectations were actually surpassed in many ways. Graphically, Infinity Ward has been able to gasp as much power as they can out of the Xbox 360 in CoD4. COD4 grips the imagination and finds a way to impact the player's emotions. And though we've seen a ton of games on similar subject matter, COD4 distinguishes itself with a washed-out gritty look and profound attention to detail. That same level of detail carries over to the online campaigns, which are just as vast and in-depth as anything found in the single player missions. Moving the series to the present day was the right move but the structure of the single player game should also have been updated. Barging from one invincible checkpoint to the next throughout the whole campaign just isn’t good enough anymore. Still the 5 hours it takes to finish the game are intense and fun. The multiplayer part is a whole ‘nother ballgame. It’s fast and furious and the new weapons and skills that you’ll unlock by increasing your rank keep you addicted. [Dec 2007]

Infinity Ward splashes a modern coat of coding on top of its old formula of checkpoint-to-checkpoint run and gun action. The game is short. While that may be an illusionary side effect of the intense plot, you'll be wishing for more when it finally comes to its thrilling conclusion. Also, the title is incredibly linear. It offers the spectre of choice in some missions, but when compared to the recent BioShock, you realize you will have seen the entire thing in one play through.

What Our Users Said

T S gave it a10:
One of the best shooters, and best games, ever. The singleplayer, while short, is just amazingly well-done. And the online is very addicting and well made. Also, it helps that it's a popular game, as people still play it to this day.

J. S. gave it an8:
A pretty decent FPS without a lot of unique single player features. The sniping mission and the AC-130 mission were the best points, but it did have some interesting combat throughout the story. I personally thought World at War was a much better game, especially multiplayer.

Joshwa R. gave it a9:
A great game. The single player is short and the play is generic. But the plot line and the story behind it is as good as if not better than any other FPS out there. That makes up for the lapses in play and in the shortness of the story. Why add fluf to appease gamers who would in turn complain of a generic story. The multiplayer is fantastic. Albeit a little glitchy and kinda hard at the start when you get good you will have fun. Most of the complaints about this game are minor bugs or just a bunch of whiners complaining about random crap they dont like. They need to get another game not turn off potential players.

Mike L gave it a10:
Wow... all the hate is amazing. The story mode was linear, but sometimes you need linearity to achieve a focused story. There are plenty of sandbox type games and 'freedom' games out there, yet most are only played through once anyways. The default mode is somewhat easy, but that's why there's a hard mode. The veteran challenge will definitely test your skills, as well as having you throw the controller at some parts. (It's almost as cheap as the endless flying bat respawns from the old NES Ninja Gaiden series.) Anyone who rates this below 5 is, in my mind, just trolling.

George gave it a6:
Uninspired, dull, and nothing new. Single-player is akin to having your hand held on a tour through an interesting locale, but one that is fret with boring and unimaginative pit stops. Each pit stop amounts to, more or less, a shooting gallery. Multiplayer is what I would call completely unoriginal with a twist. Deathmatch, the outdated stand-by, and Team Deathmatch (in essence, deathmatch without the ability to shoot certain people) are present, of course, as well as a multitude of other slight variations. The slight twist is two things. One, the ability to rank up, complete challenges, and unlock additional guns, equipment and perks. And, two, the ability to call in some form of support as a reward for killing sprees. Unfortunately, you unlock, at most, a handful of guns where one is a clear winner in each category. Equipment is mostly useless, and perks are unreliable, ineffective, useless, or all three. Calling in support during a match amounts to rewarding luck with an unfair advantage. Being harassed by an AI with the equivilent of autoaim and wallhacks defeats the purpose of multiplayer.

Garrett L gave it a6:
This game is so overrated and isn't even that fun to play online. The story in single player is the most generic story ever, terrorists with nukes. The regenerating health make it so easy to beat it this game could play itself. It is is fun but really just another generic fps on xbox 360 over hyped.

Jacob M gave it a9:
I agree with what some people have said before, the multiplayer is what keeps this game popular almost 2 years after its release. The campaign is average and was not engaging enough for me to want to play through it again, except for getting some achievements. However, the online multiplayer is insanely addicting and fun! i was not a fan of FPSs and was horrible at them until i played CoD4 online multiplayer. Yes, some of the maps are taken right from the campaign, but, to me, that doesn't matter. They are still very interesting and make the online game play unpredictable. Both the campaign and the online multiplayer are superior to that of CoD WaW in every aspect. If you don't know which one to buy, certainly buy CoD4. WaW is garbage compared to this game. However, Modern Warfare 2 is coming out in less than 4 months, so you should probably save your money for that game.
