The Hollywood Reporter Stephen Farber

Although the movie was clearly made on the cheap, cinematography, sets and costumes belie the modest budget. No one will be thunderstruck by the insights buried in "Valentine's Day," but couples seeking romantic fluff probably will find just enough humor and heart to satisfy them.

Entertainment Weekly Lisa Schwarzbaum

A charmless rom-com.

Variety Andrew Barker

A plodding mediocrity with an almost mercenary adherence to formula.

Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

The movie is set up as a valentine to Vardalos. She should try sending herself flowers.

Los Angeles Times Robert Abele

This is a film with a mission: Get to the grand-gesture climax without disturbing any clichés in its path.

Village Voice Ella Taylor

Vardalos calls her film "the ultimate indie experiment," and if that's what is meant by ham-fisted pacing, writing, and acting, this is as ultimate and as indie as it gets.

Salon.com Stephanie Zacharek

I Hate Valentine's Day is a horror show masquerading as a romantic comedy. Maybe Vardalos is just in the wrong line of work.

The New York Times Stephen Holden

You might blame Nora Ephron, whose screenplay for “When Harry Met Sally” established the formula that I Hate Valentine’s Day runs into the ground. Compared with this, Ms. Ephron is Chekhov.

USA Today Claudia Puig

This is probably the year's worst romantic comedy -- and that's saying something in a year that includes "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" and "Whatever Works."

New York Daily News Elizabeth Weitzman

Unfortunately, Vardalos has no one else to blame for a shockingly amateurish effort that goes from bad (her oddly insincere performance) to worse (consistently sloppy camera work) to make-it-stop (it would be an insult to television to call the script sitcomish).

Stick a fork in Nia Vardalos. I've been to funerals that were a lot more fun than I Hate Valentine's Day, her second alleged romantic comedy in less than a month.

Chicago Reader J.R. Jones

A nauseating, stridently phony rom-com.
